When I bought my latest R/T, it felt sluggish on the test drive which I attributed to it sitting on the lot for six months. Now after a few hundred miles, the best 0-60 times I can do is 7.1 sec. All my previous R/Ts were right around 5.2 sec. Granted, it's 100 degrees out and I'm still burning the original tank of gas which I'm sure was filled with regular instead of premium, but a full two seconds down? I'm no expert so any input?

Yeah man.. here in Chandler, AZ during summer with the 100+ temps it is like a 25% power loss once your car is warmed up. I love visiting my parents in southern california during summer, get in in the eveing with a humid cool 60f onshore flow it is like a different beast. My R/T is dr jekyl and mr hyde with summer/winter temps.

My previous 6-speeds I always ran 91 octane which is the best we can get here. The one auto I had I always ran 89 mid grade or 91 if the mid grade was not available. I think there are many owners of the auto who are unaware that the manual specifies 89 octane. Hope that doesn't piss anyone off.In the worst summer heat, no Hemi owner's got any business running around at anything less than the top available octane at the pump for the region. Doesn't matter what the owner's manual says for your model. That's just there to get in the ballpark. Adapting to the conditions where you actually drive, though...you are the last word on what octane your car needs.
Yep, my stock A5 runs the smoothest, pulls the hardest, gets better mileage, and has great drivability on 91 "pure gas".
I've tried every brand 89-93 in my area, and one station offers "pure gas"/no ethanol, but it's 91.
I know that the octane is higher than the factory recommended, and probably don't get any additional gain over a good 89, but having ZERO ethanol, and meeting factory octane needed, my car just runs better in every way.
The quality of gas does make a difference.

Just to clarify, I'm not at all advocating that throwing higher than recommended octane at your car will yield mystery power. What I am saying is that higher than recommended octane will allow your engine to minimize the power losses from heatsoak effects. When comparing that to what you will lose when using lower octane gas under these same conditions, it is a fairly significant "bump" in output. It's not really a "bump", though...just gaining back some of the larger loss up front, when the weather conditions are "not optimal". What's even better than that is doing things to prevent the air in your induction plumbing from getting hot in the first place. Of course, there is only so much you can do, considering how hot the engine bay is under worst conditions. The best you can do there is just to insulate it from the engine bay exposure as best as you can...but that is a wide and different topic of discussion from this one.

Sorry mjb4450. I looked at your post count and figured you knew my history. I used to get offended at these sorts of comments to the point of going kinda ballistic. :dunno: Especially the ones that lead off with the words junk Dodge or slow Dodge. :icon_flaming: It was intended as an inside joke of sorts. Wasn't trying to piss anyone off so I hope you take this as a sincere explanation.
But as I replied, please give it a chance to wake up. Several hundred miles with less than optimum fuel and 100* heat is not a recipe for what you have become accustomed to in the way of get up and go.
Props for being a Challenger fanatic by the way. :thumbsup:

I once was jumped on rather severely in one of the infamous Catch Can threads for being sarcastic in a reply to a newby whose side I was on but who also did not read the thread and note all the sarcasm preceding, so I know what you mean. I certainly do not trash Mopar. My nickname back in the '70s was Mikey Mopar, so that should give some indication what I was into then. It was just a real disappointment to notice the power difference from my previous R/Ts when they were new. I'll be dumping in some premium and pulling #2 fuse again this weekend.

Wow! It really did make a difference pulling the fuse and improving gas. I'm getting almost 3mpg higher and the car pulls harder. Thanks for the tip.
